One of the strangest stories dealing with ancient visitors began in 1938 when archaeologist Chi Pu Tei discovered regularly aligned rows of graves in the Baian Kara Ula mountains near the Sino-Tibetan border. Beneath cave drawings of beings wearing helmets along with depictions of the stars, sun and moon, small frail skeletons with unusually large skulls were found. Chi Pu Tei theorized that the skeletons belonged to an extinct species of mountain ape and that the drawings were left in the caves by human tribes. Since the graves were in systematic rows, his theory was laughed at and forgotten until 1962, when stone plates found among the graves were translated by Professor Tsum Um Nui of the Academy of Prehistoric Research in Beijing. The translation told an eerie story of a group of beings that crash-landed on the third planet of this star system about twelve thousand years ago. Unable to repair their craft, this group attempted to make friends with the mountain tribes but were hunted down and killed due to their non-human features. Since this account was not compatible with the Western world-view, it too was dismissed.
n 1938 high in the mountains of Bayan Kara Ula, on the borders of China and Tibet a team of archaeologists were conducting a very detailed routine survey of a series of interlocking caves. Their interests had been excited by the discovery of lines of neatly arranged graves which contained the skeletons of what must have been a race of human beings. They appeared to have spindly bodies and large overdeveloped heads. At first it had been thought that the caves had been the home of a hitherto unknown species of ape. But as the species seemed to bury its dead they eliminated an ape race. While studying the skeletons one of the members of the team stumbled on a large round stone disc half buried in the dust on the floor of the cave. The disc looked like an Stone Age record. There was a hole in the center of and a fine spiral groove that is a continuous spiraling line of closely written characters.
No one understood the meanings of the message. The disc was labeled and filed away among other finds in the area. For 20 years many experts in Beijing tried to translate the disc. Finally Dr. Tsum Um Nui broke the code and started to decipher the "speaking grooves". The Beijing academy of Pre-History forbade him to publish his findings.
In 1965, 716 more grooved stone discs were uncovered in the same caves. They told the story of a "space probe" by the inhabitants of another planet who came to the Bayan Kara Ula mountain range. They had crash landed. Their peaceful intentions had been misinterpreted. Many of them had been hunted down and killed by members of the Han tribe, who lived in the neighboring caves.
They referred to themselves as the Dropas. They said they came down from the clouds in their space craft. It crashed landed in remote and inaccessible mountains. There was no way to build a new ship. Legend in the area spoke of small gaunt yellow faced men who came from the clouds long ago. The men had huge bulging heads and puny bodies. They were so ugly they were hunted down and killed. This description is similar to the bodies found in the caves.
On the walls of the caves archaeologists found crude pictures of the rising Sun, the Moon, unidentifiable stars and the earth all joined together by lines of pea-sized dots. The cave drawings have been dated around 12,000 years ago.
The cave area is still inhabited by 2 semi-troglodyte tribes known as the Hans and the Dropas. These tribes are odd looking in appearance. They are frail and stunted in growth averaging only about 5 feet in height. They are neither typically Chinese nor Tibetan. In Russia several of the rocks were tested. The discs were found to contain large amounts of cobalt and other metallic substances. When placed on a special turntable they vibrated or hummed in an unusual rhythm as thought an electric charge was passing through them. It is as if they formed some part of an electrical circuit. Some researchers say the first mention of the Dropa story was in the German vegetarian magazine "Das Vegetarische Universum" for July 1962. Other people looked in their collection of the magazine said they found no mention of it. Other say the 1962 article in "Das Vegetarische Universum" for July 1962 was reprinted in the same magazine in 1964, but again, people who have the collection say it is not. Yet one researcher offered a translation of a 1961 article from "Das Vegetarische Universum". Another early reference, and probably one of the two earliest appearances of the Drop story is an article in the German UFO bulletin "UFO Nachrichten" (UFO information) #95, page 3, of July 1964, supposedly of exactly the same content as "Das Vegetarische Universum" of 1962. Here is the Dropa article:
The Baian-Kara-Ula hieroglyphs
Archaeologist Tsum Um-Nui: "Groove writings tells of aerial vehicles 12,000 years ago"
by Reinhardt Wegemann
In the border area between Tibet and China, lies the caves area of the Baian-Kara-Ula high mountains. There, the strange writing boards - and hieroglyphs were found 25 years ago already. Several thousand years ago, with untraceable and completely unknown devices, men carved the hardest Chinese granite rock in the shape of plates like music vinyl record. The 716 rock plates found so far in the caves of Baian-Kara-Ula look exactly like music records with a hole in the center. From there, a double groove in spiral form unwinds itself to the outer edge. Of course it does not contain music, but the strangest writing that was ever found in China and probably in the whole world.
It took archaeologists and scientists more than two decades to decipher the grooves' ancient hieroglyphics writing. Its meaning was so astonishing that the Academy for Prehistory in Beijing initially did not want to publish at all the report by scholar Professor Tsum Um-Nui. But ultimately they did. Archaeologist Tsum around-Nui agreed with four colleagues: "The grooves tell of flying machines that according to the plates existed 12,000 years ago." The disks literally said: "the Dropa came down with their air gliders from the clouds. Ten times until the sun set, they hid the indications, and saw that the Dropa came this time in peaceful intention..."
The Dropa - and Kham - races were already found previously in the heights of the high mountains. Archaeologists cannot cope with these men of only 1,30 meters height, thus very small humans that still today are not categorized. There is no parallel to the Chinese, Mongol or Tibetans. It can of course be assume that already thousands of years ago, a prankster of the Khams took the liberty of playing a joke, or that it was only a belief, when it reported of "aerial vehicles". What should other Kham groove hieroglyphs statements mean, if every sensation is to be discarded, they simply represent a singing complaint over the fact that their own "air fleet" was destroyed with the landing in the difficulty accessible mountains and that they had no means to build a new one.
The hieroglyphics of Baian Kara Ula seemed so mysterious to the Chinese Archaeology that they only make use of it with scientific caution. Particles of the stone writings plates were scraped and sent to Moscow for Analysis with a carbon clock. A sensational discovery was made: the groove plates are strongly cobalt - and metalliferous. In the test of a whole plate with an oscillograph, a surprising oscillation rhythm showed up as if the plates with the groove writings were once "charged" or would have been like some electrical conductor some was or another.
Nobody can tell what is hiding behind these groove writing plates from 12,000 years ago. Presumptions would be too daring and not objective enough. One remembers however the old Chinese legend of small thin, yellow humans, that came "from the clouds" and because of their ugliness - unusually large and broad heads on spindle-dry body - were avoided by all and killed by the "men with the fast horses" (Mongols?). Indeed, skeleton remnants from 12,000 years ago were found in graves in the caves. Notably small figures with enormous heads as actually exhibited by the Dropa - and Kham - races. In the first Chinese archaeology evaluations we are told of "a species of mountain apes that became extinct". But has anyone ver heard of "apes graves" and "apes writing plates", in the prehistoric times?! In 1940, archaeologist Tschi Pu-tei as ridiculed for this theory in the entire Asia. Tschi Pu-tei defended itself however, by explaining that he is convinced that the skeletons are apes, while the groove writing plates were put in the caves by later "cultures".
All this is somewhat confused. But it does not change anything in the hieroglyphic mystery of Baian-Kara-Ula, which becomes even more complex by the fact that the cave walls exhibit carved images of the writing plates, the rising sun, the moon and the stars and between them, whole swarms of pea-large points, which approach in elegant movement the mountains and the earth's surface.
After the earliest mentions of the Dropa story in the sixties, a book appeared in 1978, titled "Sungods in Exile" with an author's name "Karyl Robin-Evans."
The book was published as fiction, and one David A. Gammon told that one Dr. Karyl Robin-Evans, a 1914 born ethnologist, who died in 1974, had written a report so unbelievable yet true that he would not publish it. David Agamon - the supposed secretary of Robin-Evans - decided that the story can now be told.
Basically, the book told of a 1947 trip by Dr. Karyl Robin-Evans to the "mysterious land of the Dzopa", traveling through Lhassa (Tibet) where he was granted an audience with the 14th Dalai Lama. On the way to the very inaccessible region to the northeast of the Himalayas, the English scientist was abandoned by his Tibetan carriers as they were terribly afraid of Baian-Kara-Ula, and only with tremendous effort did he manage to reach his destination. After having won the faith of the people, Dr. Karyl Robin-Evans was assigned a language-teacher in order to introduce him to the basics of the Dropa language and so he learned their history from Lurgan-La, their religious guardian. Lurgan-La taught him that they originally came from a planet in the Sirius system. They lead about 12000 years ago an exploration mission to earth. Their ship crashed and those survivors among them were then unable to leave earth again.
It was easy to me to find that the book indeed exists. But what proved unsuccessful was any attempt at establishing whether a Dr. Karyl Robin-Evans existed. A search in 2004 in the Oxford University electronic catalogs (Robin-Evans allegedly was a professor there) yielded absolutely no trace of him, the only result being that their library had a copy of the "Sungod in Exile" book.
The book was stored as a fiction, containing illustrations. The book could be found (2004) by querying both author names, David Agamon - whose real name seemed to be David Gamon - or Karyl Robin-Evans. David Agamon initially stated that he published the manuscript from Robin-Evans after his death, adding that Robin-Evans did not care to publish it because "nobody would ever believe the account". Later, researcher told me or told that David Gamon confessed that it was "his best hoax" while others suggested the book doesn't even exist, and others further suggested David Gamon does not exist.
And even later (June 2006), David Gamon told me so privately (which suggests that David Gamon does exist). He said I was right to be skeptical about the book, which was written partly a tribute to, but mainly a satire upon the many books aimed at the credulous. He jokingly regretted that it was not as successful as "The Da Vinci Code"! However, because there has been recent interest in the book, it has been translated into Polish and is about to be translated into Spanish, he said.FROM THE UFO CASEBOOK:
It all began in 1937-1938, in the mountains of Baian-Kara-Ula, the remote, uninviting slopes located on the border that divides China and Tibet. An archaeological expedition, led by the highly respected Chi Pu Tei, discovered a number of unique cave burial sites. What he and his team found in these previously unknown caves would soon be considered as something highly unusual. For many it would represent one of the greatest discoveries of the century, and change everything they perceived about their distant past and their origins as a people. Those who believed in the Genesis of the Bible only saw the so-called "scientific evidence" as possible proof of another creation of God intruding into Mankind's domain. By faith, this domain and any other living, thinking beings came from the one God worshiped by Christian and Jew alike.
The Skeletons
The skeletons, measuring a little more than four feet tall, were found "frail and spindly" with "disproportionately large" skulls. At first it was suggested that these might be the remains of an unknown species of mountain gorilla. Fellow researchers initially ridiculed Tei's published findings. The concept of gorillas burying their young was preposterous, but that left one important question to ponder: "What kind of human beings could these people have been?" "Were they human at all?" More discoveries made deeper in the connectiing caves eliminated the possibility that apes had lived there. On the walls carved pictograms of the heavens were found. The Earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars were there, and all were connected by pea-sized dots. It was obvious that the pictures were meant to be a map or chart of some kind, and that they were created by intelligent beings.
The team then made what was called "the most incredible discovery of all." Half buried in the dirt floor of each cave they found unusual disks, originally referred to as "odd stone disks" and described as "obviously fashioned by the hand of an intelligent creature." These disks were approximately nine inches in diameter and three-quarters of an inch thick. In the exact center was a perfectly round 3/4 inch hole, and etched into its face was a fine groove spiraling out from the center to the rim, making the disk look like some kind of "primitive phonograph record." One of the best preserved disks was dated to between 10,000 and 12,000 years BC old, older by far than even the oldest estimates of the age of the great pyramids of Egypt. This was incredible news, but what was to come would be even more remarkable. A final total of 716 such plates were found, and each held its own mystery. The grooves, upon closer inspection, were not grooves at all, but a continuous line of an unknown writing!
Shortly after World War II, a Polish professor named Lolladoff showed one of the 'stone disks' to British scientist Dr. Karyl Robin-Evans, who helped bring the story to the western world. Lolladoff claimed to have bought the disk in Mussorie in Northern India and that it was supposed to be from a mysterious people called the "Dzopa" (or "Dropa") who had used it for religious rituals.Robin-Evans would follow the trail of the Dropa to its origins, and was able to take a rare photograph of the Dropa leaders in 1947. His visit with the Dalai Lama was legendary, and provided a wealth of information on the reclusive, unique tribe of people.
Many experts tried to translate the hieroglyphs in the 20 years the disc lay in Peking. They all failed. It was not until another professor, Dr. Tsum Um Nui, broke the code and started to decipher the 'speaking grooves' that the full implications of the disc were realized. Realized, that is, only by a select few. The outside world remained in ignorance. For the professor's conclusions on the meaning of the disc were so shattering that they were offically suppressed. The stone disks told an astonishing story of a 'space probe' by the inhabitants of another planet which came to crash in the Bayan-Kara-Ula mountain range. The strange, spiral script told how the peaceful intentions of the 'aliens' had been misunderstood, and how many of them were hunted down and killed by members of the Ham tribe, who lived in the neighboring caves.
According to Nui, one of the lines of the hieroglyphs read, "The Dropas came down from the clouds in their aircraft. The men, women and children of the neighboring peoples (Ham) hid in the caves ten times before sunrise. When at last they understood the sign language of the Dropas, they realized that the newcomers had peaceful intentions...".
Another section of the writings expressed 'regret' by the Ham tribe that the aliens' spaceship had crash-landed in such a remote and inaccessible mountains and that there had been no way of building a new one to enable the Dropas to return to their own planet. In the years since the discovery of the first disk, archeologists and anthropologists had learned more about the isolated Bayan-Kara-Ula area. Much of what they learned seemed to corroborate the bizarre story recorded on the discs. Legend still preserved in the area spoke of small, gaunt, yellow faced men who 'came from the stars, long, long ago'. The men had huge, bulging heads and puny bodies and were so ugly and repellent that they were hunted down by local tribesmen on horseback. Strangely, the description of the 'invaders' tallied with the skeletons originally discovered in the caves by Professor Chi Pu Tei.
On February 26, 1967, the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner ran an article about the Dropas.
"Riddle of Asian Stone Discs from Outer Space"
(original newspaper headline)
Russian archaeologists are puzzling over a remarkable collection of stone discs, thousands of years old, found in the mountains bordering China and Tibet. So hard is it to explain them in terms of earthly experience that the archaeologists do not rule out the possibility that the discs may have come from outer space.
A total of 716 discs, like Stone Age gramophone records have been picked up in recent years by men exploring caves in the Bayan-Kara- Ula mountain range, reports the Soviet Union's new English-language magazine, Sputnik.
Each disc has a central hole and irregular grooves spiraling out to the edge, but the report says (quite seriously) that the groves are not sound tracks. It is thought that they are some form of ancient writing, but scientists have so far failed to decipher them.
Chinese archaeologists estimate that the discs are about 12,000 years old, but have made no headway at all in trying to explain their purpose or how they came to be in the caves. The Russians, who have examined some of the discs in a Moscow laboratory, claim to have made two important discoveries. One is that the discs contain certain traces of metal; particularly cobalt. Secondly, when placed on a special turntable they hummed in an unusual rhythm like an electrical charge was passing through them.
The Russian Zaitsev, who has spent 30 years collecting evidence that intelligent beings from outer space have had contact with the earth, believes that the discs may give substance to ancient Chinese legends of small, gaunt, yellow-faced men who came down from the clouds many centuries ago. Drawings on the cave walls portrayed beings with round helmets, and drawings of the sun, moon and stars were shown with interconnecting rows of dots. The interconnecting dots could possibly portray the routes traveled by the ancestors of the beings in the graves or might have been drawn to show the outerspace origin of the ones who perished there in the cave.
THE LEGEND:
In 1968 the Russian scientist W. Saitsew published a paper which raised a lot of interest in the subject of nonterrestrians visiting earth in the past. Some of the information presented in his paper were based on the work which Professor Tsum Um Nui had done in 1962. For several years, nothing was heard of the disks. Then, in 1974, an Austrian engineer named Ernst Wegener came upon two of the disks in the Banpo Museum in Xian. The museum director could tell him nothing about the disks, which had begun to deteriorate, but she allowed him to touch one of them and to photograph them. He did so, but he had only a Polaroid camera with him. These photos are the ones that we see often reprinted today. In 1994, when Hartwig Hausdorf was in China, he asked the current director of the Banpo Museum about the disks and was told that they had disappeared.
In 1995 China released the following news report:
"In the province of Sichuan, which lies on the eastern border of the Baian-Kara-Ula mountains, 120 people of a previously ethnologically unclassified tribe have been discovered. The most important aspect of this new tribe is the size of its people: No taller than 3 ft. 10 in., the smallest adult measuring only 2 ft. 1 in! This discovery might be the first hard evidence on the existance of the Dropa/Dzopa - a people whose predecessors are said to have come from the stars."
Today, the isolated area between Tibet and China is inhabited by two tribes of people who, in fact, call themselves the Dropa and the Ham. Once enemies, these two tribes now co-exist peacefully. (right) Anthropologists have been unable to categorize either tribe into any other known race; they are neither Chinese nor Tibetan. Both tribes are of pygmy stature, adults measuring between 3-foot-6 and 4-foot-7 with an average height of 4-foot-2, and body weights of 38 to 52 pounds. They are yellow-skinned with thin bodies and disproportionately large heads, corresponding to the skeletal remains found in the caves in 1938. They have sparse hair on their bodies and have large eyes that are not Asian in aspect, but have pale blue irises. The Dropa people and their talking stone disks remain as mysterious today as they did in the late 1930s. Many researcher feel that the Dropa stone disks are definitive proof of an alien race that "came from the stars."
